Golf Aficionado recently had the opportunity to test-drive a Golf Pride TOUR SNSR putter grip. Over the past few years the putter grip market has experienced a disrupted force, oversized grips. The oversized putter grip market has been largely dominated by Super Stroke. However, Golf Pride who grips more putters on the PGA Tour than anyone else has thrown their hat into the oversized putter grip market. Golf Pride has taken their years of knowledge and expertise to develop the oversized putter line they brand as TOUR SNSR. The TOUR SNSR line includes two different models STRIGHT and CONTOUR, both featuring the new innovative SNSR material that delivers unsurpassed Tour-level feel and feedback. Both models are available in two different sizes 104cc and 140cc.
After being introduced to the new TOUR SNSR line back in January at the PGA Merchandise Show, I instantly fell in love with the 140cc TOUR SNSR CONTOUR. The CONTOUR model is an evolution of the classic pistol contour that has long been preferred by many PGA Tour players. During the show I was extremely curious to see what all the hype was about. I had heard from several friends at the show about how impressed they were with the new putter grips from Golf Pride. On the final day of the show I finally had enough time to test out each model and size on the
Golf Pride putting green. For me, the 140cc TOUR SNSR CONTOUR was the best fit; from the moment I picked it up I felt as if it was custom made just for me.
A practice putting green is one thing but I was anxious to get a hold of the TOUR SNSR CONTOUR and put it through the paces on the course. After patiently waiting several months following the PGA Show, I finally got my hands on the grip and instantly had my Scotty Cameron GoLo 5 Putter re-gripped. My GoLo 5 is a 2014 model and I was still using the stock Scotty Cameron red grip made by Golf Pride. I had been thinking of re-gripping my putter for some time and had watched several playing partners switch to oversized grips with varying levels of success.
Now that I had finally made the switch I was looking forward to see what impact it would have on my game if any. I’m a statistical nut and thanks to the 18 birdies iOS app, I’ve been tracking my number of putts per round for some time. Putting can be streaky, even the pros can go from lights out to struggling. Therefore, I decided the best way to measure immediate impact of the grip change was to take my previous 3 rounds prior the grip change and compare them with the 3 rounds following the grip change. My average number of putts per hole before the putter change was 1.9. After switching to a TOUR SNSR CONTOUR 140cc grip my average number of putts per hole decreased to 1.7 putts per hole. A 0.2 improvement might not sound like much, but if you extrapolate that over 18 holes you’re talking about a 3.6 stroke difference.
Golf Pride TOUR SNSR Product Rating (Overall Rating 5 stars out of 5)
After looking at the numbers before and after switching putter grips I’m sold on the fact that I’m a better putter with the TOUR SNSR grip than without. Buying a putter grip is probably one of the most difficult purchases a golfer can make. It’s not like you can walk into a pro shop or superstore and try out your putter with various grips. The closest you come to trying a grip out is holding it in your hands after you pull it from the bin. It’s hard to judge anything about a putter grip if it’s not on a putter. That being said, I urge you to give the Golf Pride TOUR SNSR a look. Probably the best compliment I can give the TOUR SNSR line is that their oversized putter grips that don’t feel oversized at all. In a time where everyone seems to think bigger is better the TOUR SNSR feels just right.
