Throughout 2021 Golf Aficionado has had a couple of opportunities to interact with True Spec Golf. Staff writer Matt Ozanne was invited out to True Spec Headquarters in his backyard in Scottsdale, Arizona, for a driver fitting. He was so impressed with the experience he talked me into checking out True Spec Orlando, where I had the chance to try out all the latest drivers and see if I could improve on my current setup.
True Spec Orlando is co-located with the Leadbetter Golf Academy world headquarters in Championsgate, Florida. I want to not only highlight my fitting experience but also talk about the fact that so many of the world’s best golf instructors have partnered with True Spec.
The Leadbetter Academy is at the top of a long list of world-class golf instructors and academies that have decided to partner with True Spec to provide their students not only the best in golf instruction but golf club fitting as well.
By the time you finish reading this article, I hope you walk away with the same trust and confidence in True Spec that some of the best golf instructors in the world have placed in them.
My Fitting Experience
Back to my experience at True Spec Orlando. I showed up at a regular fitting appointment looking to purchase a new driver. My current specs, I’m a 15 handicap with a driving average of about 240 yards. I’m currently using the Virtual Groove Driver from Virtual Groove Golf with an Aldila extra stiff shaft.
During the fitting, I tried pretty much every driver head available on the market. Titleist, Callaway, TaylorMade, Cobra, and Ping, you name it, and I tried it along with several different shaft combinations. I went in fully expecting to walk away with a shinney new driver; I just wasn’t sure which combination would be best for my game. Let’s face it my current driver is several years old, and technology has improved leaps and bounds over the past several years.
As it turns out, I didn’t walk away with a new driver. After spending over an hour hitting golf balls and trying different combinations of heads and shafts, my fitter looks at me and says, “I can’t put you in anything better than what you got.”
You could have knocked me down with a feather. Can’t you do any better? Trackman doesn’t lie. At the end of the day, while other drivers came close, nothing blew my current driver out of the water, and I walked away, saving myself $600+ and a new appreciation for the honesty and integrity of True Spec Golf.
After my positive fitting experience, I was anxious to learn more about the partnership between True Spec and the world’s best golf instructors. I had the chance to interview Mark Durland, a Top 100 instructor who runs Durland Golf School at Naples Grande Resort in Naples, Florida.
Choosing To Partner With True Spec Golf
Talking to Mark, he made it very clear why he decided to partner with True Spec Golf. Simply put, Mark’s busy enough trying to keep up with the trends in teaching and doesn’t have enough time to worry about all the technology trends in golf equipment. True Spec allows him to focus on education and not on the MOI of the newest drivers.
When you visit the Durland Golf Academy, there are two tents. One for Mark to conduct lessons and one for Ture Spec to conduct fittings. The partnership between Mark and True Spec has helped students find the proper equipment and, like my experience, stop golfers from buying expensive new hardware that won’t have the same impact on their game that a lesson with Mark might provide.
Mark also bragged about the Tour like experience that True Spec provides golfers. Brand agnostic, trackman outside experience gathering all your data and numbers to help decide if new equipment is the answer to a lower score.
Mark also noted the honesty and trustworthiness of True Spec. Like my fitting experience, he’s said time and again that if they can’t find something better, they’ll tell you that or send you for a lesson to get a repeatable swing that can be fit for new equipment.
For those looking for a complete learning and fitting experience, you should check out the True Spec Blueprint experience. In conjunction with a session at the academy, send your clubs up ahead of time and have your entire bag inspected. True Spec will check loft, lie, frequency, weight, etc. Is your 8-iron stronger than your 7-iron?
Before your lesson begins, Mark reviews the blueprint produced by True Spec and is alerted to any issues, and can become aware of any potential problems which can be addressed at the academy.
To top things off, True Spec and all these World Class Instructors interact and share Trackman data. The focus is on YOU, the client, and getting you to peak performance. Peak Performance can only be achieved through coaching and fitting, working hand-to-hand to deliver the best golf.
If you’re looking to improve your game (who isn’t) or just looking to upgrade to the latest equipment, check out True Spec Golf. They have you covered either way, and you can trust them to help you make the right decision. To schedule a fitting with True Spec Golf, check out their website.
