Rendering of hole 15, Work at CCNC is scheduled to begin in fall 2028, with reopening expected in fall 2029.

The Country Club of North Carolina has selected architect Andrew Green to renovate its Cardinal Course, setting the stage for a new chapter at the Pinehurst club.

Announced October 1, the project is scheduled to begin in fall 2028, with the course expected to reopen in fall 2029. McDonald & Sons Golf Course Builders will handle construction, continuing a longstanding relationship with Green, who spent 12 years with the firm before establishing his own practice.

For golfers who follow course architecture, Green’s appointment brings considerable interest. His portfolio includes work at Congressional’s Blue Course, Oak Hill’s East Course, Inverness, Scioto and East Lake, home of the PGA Tour’s Tour Championship. His renovations at Interlachen Country Club and Chevy Chase Club earned Golf Digest’s Renovation of the Year honors for 2024 and 2025, respectively.

At CCNC, the overall plan has been approved, but Green emphasized that the design process remains active.

“With the plan approved, our attention now turns to the details and execution of the Cardinal project,” Green said.

He and the project team will continue studying individual holes, testing ideas and refining the design as they establish the construction sequence. That leaves specific changes to the layout still to be developed ahead of the scheduled start.

“There is still important design work ahead,” Green said. “As we move toward construction, we will continue to study each hole, test ideas, and refine details to make sure we are getting the most out of the property and the plan.”

The Cardinal has evolved through several architectural chapters. It opened as a nine-hole Willard Byrd design in 1970, expanding CCNC to 27 holes. Another nine holes followed in 1981 under the direction of Robert Trent Jones Sr., completing the layout. Arthur Hills later renovated the course.

Green’s assignment will add another chapter to that history, with club leadership looking toward both the membership experience and future competition.

“Andrew Green’s work is undoubtedly successful and eye-opening,” said CCNC President Charlie Rivers. “His vision for the future of the Cardinal Course at CCNC is equally innovative. The membership is enthusiastic about watching this project come to life.”

Founded in 1963, CCNC has an established championship pedigree. The club hosted the 1980 U.S. Amateur won by Hal Sutton, the 2010 U.S. Girls’ Junior won by Doris Chen and the 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur won by Nick Dunlap. It is also scheduled to host the 2037 U.S. Women’s Amateur and will welcome the Southern Amateur for the eighth time in 2027.

The Cardinal project follows the 2016 renovation of CCNC’s Dogwood Course by Kris Spence. With Green now entrusted to reshape the club’s other 18 holes, CCNC’s next major course investment has a defined direction and a three-year runway before its anticipated debut.
