Recently our team at Golf Aficionado was introduced to Antigua apparel and I wanted to share our experience. With deep roots in the golf market, Antigua has spent more than 36 years building a solid reputation with numerous tournaments and tour professionals. To that end, the Antigua staff includes several members of both the PGA and LPGA tours. I can assure you the Golf Aficionado staff is no match for members of any professional tour let alone the PGA or LPGA, but it is nice knowing we can wear the same apparel as the pros.
Things to know about Antigua, they keep things simple and fun without breaking the bank. Also, you’ll never find a pair of Antigua golf pants because they don’t make pants. The company focuses on producing high-performance golf shirts, shorts, and jackets that provide supreme comfort and mobility on and off the golf course. During a recent trip to Streamsong Resort, I had the chance to put my Antigua apparel to the test while playing in the 90-degree temperatures of Central Florida.
The bag I packed for Streamsong included several items from Antigua’s 2017 Spring/Summer collection. Antigua was kind enough to provide me more than enough apparel for my 36-hole two-day adventure at Streamsong. The foundation of Antigua’s performance golf line is their Desert Dry Technology, a moisture-wicking technology created exclusively for Antigua to absorb and wick moisture quickly & evenly. Moisture-wicking technology isn’t new to golf, over the past several years golf apparel manufacturers have adopted some form of the technology and it has become a staple in today’s golf shirt design. During my two rounds at Streamsong, the 90+ degree temperatures provided ample opportunity to experience Antigua’s moisture-wicking capabilities.
To be honest, there wasn’t a noticeable difference in the moisture-wicking performance. When compared to other golf shirts in my closet, all which feature some type of moisture-wicking technology the apparel from Antigua was on par. However, what sets Antigua apart from the rest of my closet is the balance of luxury and economy. Many of the golf shirts in my wardrobe have a much higher retail price and are limited to use just on the golf course. Antigua separates itself from the rest of the golf apparel market by providing an extensive selection of affordable men’s and ladies’ golf apparel with both performance and style in mind, all of which make Antigua one of the best values in golf.
More recently Antigua has expanded outside of golf and has become the go-to provider for team apparel. In fact, Antigua currently holds licenses with all the major professional sports leagues; including the NFL, NBA, MLS, UFC, Arena Football, MLB, Minor League Baseball, NHL and hundreds of colleges and universities. Recently, Antigua once again provided uniforms for Team USA at the 2017 Solheim Cup. Antigua designer Danielle Dellios, took the traditional red, white, and blue color scheme and combined vibrant abstract prints to produce fresh new designs for Team USA.
Antigua Performance Golf Apparel Rating A- (4.4 out of 5)
Fit & Feel – A
In terms of fit and feel, Antigua earned an A from the Golf Aficionado team. The cuts are generous and the fabric feels good on the skin and performs well in extreme summer temperatures and high humidity. We also found that Antigua runs true to size, f you normally wear a size large you’ll be comfortable in a large from Antigua.
Fashion – B
We had a wide range of designs and prints sent to us, the majority of them looked great and would fit in perfectly on or off the course. However, there are a few prints in the 2017 line that would be limited to just the golf course, but the majority of the 2017 line is flexible enough to wear around town.
Technology – B
Technology?? Yes, I know this is an apparel article but believe it or not manufactures make huge investments in the technology and science behind their clothes. As previously stated the core of the technology behind all Antigua apparel is Desert Dry Technology. The apparel sent to us featured the classic Desert Dry Technology, the company has recently released additional versions with some pieces featuring Desert Dry Xtra-Lite and Desert Dry Bamboo. Antigua earned a B for their technology grade, the moisture wicking capability worked as expected but didn’t set a new bar.
Value – A+
Golf is an expensive sport, with greens fees and equipment cost seemingly rising every year. As a Golf Aficionado, we know you not only want to play well but look good while doing so. Golf attire is expensive and many of the options for golf attire are limited to use only on the golf course. Fortunately, Antigua offers an extensive selection of affordable men’s and ladies’ golf apparel which looks good on and off the course. Antigua competes with all the top brands in both performance and style but earns in A+ by beating the competition hands down when it comes to retail price!
