Amidst the rugged beauty of St. George, Utah lies Black Desert. This property, although still under construction, is emerging as a beacon of innovation and luxury in the world of golf. Black Desert was the last course project Tom Weiskopf touched since being diagnosed with cancer. Weiskopf’s longtime design partner Phil Smith completed the design of Black Desert and it just recently opened in 2023. It has quickly made its mark on the golfing world, despite being open for just a mere 10 months. Black Desert boasts a design that seamlessly blends with the natural black lava rock terrain, offering a challenging yet captivating golfing experience.
As we arrived at Black Desert, we saw construction crews hard at work and getting the resort completed before their first PGA Tour event. Black Desert is set to host the PGA Tour’s new Black Desert Championship on October 9-13 ,2024. This event marks Utah’s first PGA Tour event since 1963. This prestigious event will showcase the course’s championship-caliber layout and help solidify its place among North America’s elite golf destinations. Additionally, the LPGA is expected to follow and hold a tour event in 2025.
Once we checked into the golf shop, we were immediately given wrist bands permitting us to access the taco truck, snacks, and beverages. This was a delight to our group because we always arrive hungry.
We were paired with one caddie for our foursome. Our knowledgeable caddie helped us select our lines off the tee as there are several blind shots that can be difficult for first-time players. He also helped us spot and locate our tee shots. Who doesn’t need another set of eyes out on the golf course!?
As we made our way through the course, it was evident that Black Desert is more than just a golf course—it’s a destination. Although the resort, clubhouse, and surrounding homes and villas are still under construction, this property promises a future of unparalleled luxury and comfort for guests and residents alike.

The driving range features Trackman ball tracking technology at each station, allowing players to fine-tune their game with precision and accuracy. Additionally, the course boasts an 18-hole putting course as part of its practice facilities, providing ample opportunities for players to hone their skills on the greens. The chipping facility gives players plenty of room to practice all different kinds of chips and bunker shots to stay sharp before game time.
