Residents and visitors can savor culinary experiences celebrating the region’s rich flavors and local ingredients. From farm-to-table restaurants to cozy cafes, Sylva offers something for every palate. I highly recommend visiting Ilda, where Southern Italian and Appalachian-inspired dishes are served in a beautiful setting in the heart of downtown Sylva.

The Best Golf Course You Never Knew Existed
When I was first invited to Balsam Mountain Preserve, I have to admit that I had never heard of it, and neither had my colleagues—I was instantly intrigued. After visiting Balsam Mountain Preserve, it’s hard to believe this beautiful gem remains so unknown.
The championship golf course beautifully integrates with the Appalachian landscape. Designed by the renowned Arnold Palmer, this 18-hole masterpiece offers breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains at every turn. The course’s challenging layout will be a challenge for anyone playing the course for the first time. I’m going to provide an insider-tip that will make it easier to know where to aim your tee-shot. Trust me, once you get a taste, you’ll want to keep coming back for more….
The course is in phenomenal shape and, with such an exclusive membership, it doesn’t get beat up by a bunch of public play. The course plays softer than you would expect. The summer climate in this stretch of Blue Ridge Mountain includes a lot of rain and moisture, so don’t expect a lot of runout; and potentially a few plugged golf balls.
I was fortunate enough to play with a member. He was the ideal match, as we have similar handicaps and are IT nerds. He shared several inside tips, like where to aim, but I still struggled. I fell in love with the golf course. The best advice I can give anyone after playing the course is to aim for the Legacy Tee markers. The golf course has a set of friendly tees set up for beginner players. Those Legacy Tee Markers are the perfect aiming spot from the tee box.
The club’s golf facilities include a fully-stocked pro shop with a few local food items for residents to purchase and local crafts from a former employee turned blacksmith making some of the most extraordinary knives you have ever seen.
The practice area is one of the best you’ll find. A stunning backdrop that allows you to crush brand-new Vice range balls. In the evening, the practice area converts to a six-hole pitch a putt that is the perfect pre-dinner activity.
