When you step onto the property at Diamante, you are greeted with blue skies, a hint of wind, and the Pacific Ocean sparkling in the background. After getting whipped around in 40+ mph gusts the day before on the Dunes Course, this was a welcome change for us. Calm weather, smooth fairways, and the chance to see what Tiger Woods’ first-ever course design had in store for us. Spoiler: it did not disappoint.
After battling the wind on the Dunes Course the day before—when 8-irons became 5-irons and every putt was a guessing game—it was a huge relief to tee it up under perfect conditions. No jackets. No gusts. Just clean swings and predictable ball flights.
Driving Range Goals
Before we even stepped onto the first tee, we were already impressed. The driving range at El Cardonal is just flat-out cool. There’s tons of space—no fighting for a spot or hitting off worn-out turf. You’ve got comfortable seating where you can take your time changing shoes or sipping a pre-round beverage.
And the best part? The caddies are out there too, cleaning your clubs between swings like you’re warming up for a Sunday final round. It sets the tone: you’re not just playing golf—you’re being taken care of.
There’s something relaxing about the whole setup. You feel like you’re at a private club, not just a resort course. The range becomes part of the experience, not just a warm-up zone.
Facilities That Go the Extra Mile
El Cardonal has its own clubhouse separate from the Dunes Course, and it’s got its own vibe. Sleek, modern, and tailored to match the Tiger brand. There’s a Nike pro shop, indoor hitting bays with swing analysis tech, and spots to grab a drink or a snack before or after the round.
It’s not flashy for the sake of being flashy—it’s functional, stylish, and comfortable. You can tell thought went into every square foot. It’s a clubhouse that feels like an extension of the course itself: strategic, cool, and welcoming.
The Course
“I set up the golf strategy to make golfers think and make choices. Regardless of your handicap, there are going to be different ways to play every hole. Angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type of shots you should consider. I love this kind of golf.”—Tiger Woods.
El Cardonal starts you off nice and easy with a par 5 and a generous fairway. If you avoid the fairway bunker on the left side, this is a very reachable hole with a chance at an opening eagle! The layout at El Cardonal is too good to be rushing through it, and we made sure to take our time on a day where the course was open and the weather was pristine.
You can absolutely tell Tiger Woods designed this course. From the first tee to the final green, it’s got his style written all over it. Wide fairways give you options off the tee—but don’t let that fool you. Every hole makes you think.
Do you challenge the bunker on the left and set up a shorter shot? Or do you play safe to the right and leave yourself a tough angle into a tucked pin? It’s risk-reward golf, Tiger-style. The course doesn’t beat you up—it dares you to take it on. And when you make the wrong call? Well, that’s on you.
The greens are big, but don’t expect easy reads. Subtle breaks and tiers make lag putting tricky if you’re on the wrong side of the hole. But when you hit the right shot, the course rewards you. It’s a fun chess match, and you can feel Tiger’s competitive spirit baked into every hole.
Speaking of taking your time, one of our favorite parts on the course were the comfort stations. A nice reminder to pause, enjoy good food, and really soak in the gorgeous surroundings.
Whether you are playing well, or struggling to move the ball around the course, the comfort stations at El Cardonal have your back and are absolutely elite. We’re talking stocked with snacks, drinks, and rotating hot food options. But the real MVP? The sausage sandwich at the comfort station near hole 15. Good grief. That thing was worth the price of admission alone. I wasn’t particularly hungry, but once I laid eyes on that sandwich, I had to try one.
Hot, juicy sausage with just the right amount of spice, grilled onions, melted cheese, all tucked into a fresh, slightly toasted bun. It was one of those “pause your round and savor it” moments. Add in a cold beer or a tequila spritzer, and you’ve got a mid-round treat that could make you forget what hole you’re on (we actually did forget which hole we were on). Every station felt like a resort restaurant disguised as a golf snack shack. And yes, they were complimentary, which made it all taste even better.
His First Design
El Cardonal was Tiger’s first foray into golf course design, opening in 2014. And honestly? He crushed it. This place doesn’t feel like a rookie effort at all. The layout is smooth and intuitive, with great flow from hole to hole and subtle elevation changes that show off the stunning Cabo coastline.
You can tell Tiger put serious thought into making it playable for all levels. High handicappers can enjoy wide landing areas and bailout options, while better players have lines they can take on if they’re feeling bold. It’s the kind of course you want to play over and over again—because you know there’s always a smarter way to navigate it.
A PGA Tour Stop
If you need more validation that El Cardonal is the real deal, just look at the PGA Tour schedule. The World Wide Technology Championship—previously held at Mayakoba—now calls El Cardonal home. That’s right: Tiger’s first design is officially a tour stop.
Watching the pros take on this course on TV gives you a whole new appreciation for it. You start thinking back to your own shots: “Oh, I hit it there too! Except I made double and they made birdie…” But seriously, it’s awesome to play a course where the best in the world compete—and see just how strategic every inch of it really is.
Final Score: El Cardonal Delivers the Goods
When you add it all up—Tiger’s clever design, the PGA Tour pedigree, the unforgettable comfort stations, and a practice facility that feels like a spa—it’s hard not to love El Cardonal. The weather gave us a break, the course gave us options, and that sausage sandwich on 15 gave us life.
It’s not just a round of golf. It’s an experience, one where you can challenge yourself, eat like royalty, and soak in the Baja sun—all in the same day.
So if you’re heading to Cabo and only have time for one course? Honestly… play both. But make sure El Cardonal is on your list. It’s Tiger’s first, and it’s still one of his best.
