Ryder Cup Spirit at the Country Club of North Carolina

In Golf Courses by Rob Spellman

Golf has always had a way of building bridges across oceans, and few friendships capture that spirit better than the one between The Country Club of North Carolina (CCNC) and Royal Dornoch Golf Club in Scotland. This fall, the camaraderie between the two clubs took center stage in Pinehurst as teams squared off in a Ryder Cup–style competition that blended tradition, competition, and a healthy dose of fun.

A Tale of Two Rosses

What ties these two clubs together is more than just competition—it’s a shared legacy. Both CCNC and Royal Dornoch owe their roots to Donald Ross, the legendary architect who brought Scottish sensibility to American soil. Ross learned the game at Royal Dornoch before making his mark in the United States, where his designs—particularly in Pinehurst—have become hallowed ground for golfers worldwide.

The Ryder Cup-style event was less about winning and losing, and more about celebrating that heritage. Every match carried a sense of history, as if Ross himself had one foot in Scotland and one in North Carolina, smiling at the reunion of two of his golfing families.

Transatlantic Rivalry

The team from Royal Dornoch made the journey “across the pond,” trading linksland winds for the towering pines of CCNC. The CCNC side welcomed them with southern hospitality—and the kind of golf that has made Pinehurst one of the game’s great destinations. Matches were fiercely contested, with pride on the line and plenty of banter exchanged between the teams.

More Than a Match

Beyond the scorecards, the event was about fellowship. Shared dinners, laughter, and the blending of Scottish and Carolinian traditions reminded everyone why golf is more than just a sport. The competition honored not only the friendship between the two clubs but also the timeless design principles of Donald Ross, whose influence had initially connected them.

Looking Ahead

If the Ryder Cup reminds us that golf can be a battle of nations, this event reminded us that it can also be a celebration of unity. CCNC and Royal Dornoch have forged a bond that transcends geography, rooted in Ross’s legacy and a shared passion for the game.

And while the matches may fade into memory, the friendships forged on those fairways—spanning from Scotland to North Carolina—will no doubt stand the test of time.
